December State Authorization Email Updates & Information

Hello and Happy SARA Renewal Season!

All three campuses should have received our reminder to complete and file our SARA renewal by now (I got Boulder's on 12/1). Don't forget you have 30 days from the day it is sent to submit the form to Heather DeLange (our State Portal Entity) at CDHE. I don't know about you, but 30 days from the sent date lands squarely in the middle of my vacation. Just keep an eye on the calendar since you will likely need information from others on your campus to get the renewal completed.

There was an interesting conversation on the WCET listserv earlier this week about an article on DACA recipients and some of the hurdles they face in finding employment post graduation. There was a particular section that seemed to jump out to a few people - "While federal law restricts states from extending licensure to unauthorized immigrants, five states have passed legislation opting out of these restrictions. Another 12 have statutes extending licensure in specific professions to immigrants with DACA protection.”

I personally didn't run in to language like that when doing the research for professional licensure disclosures, then again I wasn't looking for it either. But that doesn't make it any less troubling. Are we required to to disclose this information if we know it/come across it in our research? No, not "required" by any regulatory body but it does open up an interestong moral issue. I'm not sure how many students Boulder has that falls in to both the undocumented and enrolled in professional licensure program (I can say - thanks Rob! - that it's less than 50). I'm not entirely sure how I will handle this for Boulder, and I know those in far more elevated positions than mine are looking in to this (read: the folks at WCET have added it to their research priorities). I will say it might not be a bad idea to spot check a few programs & states and see if you come up with anything!

Part II of the WCET SAN Virtual Member Policy Series was today and the topic was Professional Licensure disclosures. Once they post the slides and a link to the webcast I'll be sure to pass the excellent session along to you all! And if you're curious - you can find the slides and transcript from my session on Regular and Substantive Interaction (shameless plug) here.

Have an excellent holiday season, my friends! I hope you get some time to disconnect from work and relax with family, friends and loved ones!

But please don't forget to submit your SARA renewal first.
