May 2022 State Authorization Email Updates & Information

Hello hello!

Still nothing but silence from the Dept. of Education on potential new regulations which is... good? Maybe? Maybe by the end of May?

But looking at the here & now - As we do every year, between May 15-June 15th institutions that participate in SARA are required to report on the Fall exclusively distance education enrollments and the out-of-state learning placements for the previous calendar year - both should be disaggregated by state. Below are some helpful links, including one for this year's training webinar, in case you need some reminder on what is reported, how it's used, and where/how to get it all done:

As a reminder when doing the reporting or gathering your data:

2 sets of data, disaggregated by state:

  • Students enrolled exclusively online
  • Students enrolled in OOSLPs (also disaggregated by 2-digit CIP)

New for 2022:

  • Follow IPEDS Guidance for Reporting Emergency Remote Learning
  • Report all OOSLP, even if they were not completed or moved online due to the pandemic
  • Do not report 100% virtual placements

And if you’re looking a head to next year's (2023) reports -

  • Branch campus reporting becomes mandatory - this means that programs or placements cannot be listed as originating from a branch campus. All placements and distance data is to be noted as coming from the main campus (the SARA participant/accredited institution) as it’s the campus with degree granting authority & recognition. This has been optional in 2020-2022, but will be live and required in 2023. This requirement is also in-line with potential new requirements from the Department of Education.

I gave a session at the recent AAUDE conference (thank you, Rob!) for folks in Data Analytics and/or IR on working with those of us who do the data reporting and how NC-SARA uses the data (along wit the importance of reporting accurate data). Slides are acached for your reference as I went in to some of the nuance with the SARA data reporting that I think is important for everyone to be aware of (including the difference between what SARA covers and what is reported).

Have a great rest of the week everyone! Here’s hoping the sun makes an appearance soon!
