September 2022 State Authorization Email Updates & Information

Hello everyone!

It's time we move a little outside our comfort zones and pay some attention to our neighbors to the north. Let's talk about Canadian Authorization.

Canada does not have a federal education system, instead the individual Provinces dictate the rules/regulations for delivering education to their citizens. And much like the US before SARA, the rules vary from province to province, and (you know this is coming) can be more complicated when it comes to programs that are intended to lead to professional licensure.

And much like the US before SARA, the rules vary from province to province, and (you know this is coming) can be more complicated when it comes to programs that are intended to lead to professional licensure.

What types of things could trigger your institution to have to seek authorization in one of the provinces?

  • Advertising the program in the province
  • A distance student taking an on‐ground experiential learning placement in the province
  • Actively recruiting in the province

WCET‐SAN will be releasing a chart later this fall to help us in addressing the various nuances associated with delivering education in Canada (and another set of information on Mexico in 2023).

While authorization in Canada this doesn't appear to include individual courses (credit or non‐credit), it would likely apply to programs other than traditional degrees, such as certificates, microcredentials, and badges. As a reminder, much like with state authorization, individual institutions are responsible for obtaining authorization where and when ‐ A third ‐party provider may not represent an institution for contracting or working with any state, territory, or foreign nation.

Talk to your IR folks ‐ how many of your students are LOCATED in Canada? Which provinces? What are they enrolled in?

Finally – if you’re planning on heading into Denver for the WCET Annual Meeting but haven’t registered, there’s still time! You can see the whole program and register here and use the code WCETFriend for $100 off your registration fee!

Have a wonderful rest of your week and as always if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
