May 2023 State Authorization Email Updates & Information

It's SARA Data Reporting time! That magical time of year where we hunt for the elusive OOSLPs that stem from various departments and units all over campus!

Data is due to NC‐SARA by the end of business on June 15th. I can honestly say once you have the data, the report itself takes maybe 30 mins to fill in and submit, which is nice. Far less work than the renewal we did back in December.

For this year's SARA update, the only new thing is about how to report data that stems from the branch campus, but considering the Anschutz campus is only a county over, this set of rules shouldn't have an effect on Denver's reporting ‐ but it might be a good idea to take a look at that section of the NC‐SARA Data Reporting Handbook just in case.

Speaking of the Handbook, please don't get too caught up in it ‐ once again it's valiant effort by the team at NC‐SARA but fails to give some basic straight forward answers to many of the question institutions traditionally have when reporting on our data. If you run in to a snag when collecting or reporting your data, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

You can see how NC‐SARA publishes all the data they collect and the various ways you can slice it here: https://nc‐ sara.org/data‐dashboards

In other news ‐ yesterday the Department of Education officially withdrew February's Dear Colleague Letter that changed the guidance on TPS relationships and sent many of us running around with our hair on fire. This is good news! However, in this new DCL, they noted that they would likely be revisiting this topic at a later date ‐ reaffirming the belief that many of us have had that they will more likely than not be proposing new regulations relating to TPS and specifically OPMs in Negotiated Rulemaking set to take place early this fall. Don't toss out any work or reviews you did or are doing; I suspect it will all come in handy later this year or sometime early next year.

And finally, a workshop and a couple conferences to keep on your radars if you have some professional development and travel funds to use ‐

First, this summer, on August 3 is the COLTT Conference (Boulder, CO). The CO Learning and Teaching with Technology conference is a one‐day event focusing on engaging participants in learning about teaching practices and technologies and challenging the way they think about both. And because Jaimie Henthorn is wonderful, Heather Delange (our State Portal Entity from CDHE) and I are able to co‐host an afternoon of conversations and work on state authorization with colleges and universities of all types from across the state (and some of the neighboring states b/c the University of Wyoming is all alone up there). More information on the State Authorization side will be coming soon, so save the date.

The WCET 35th Annual Meeting will be held October 25‐27 with a special preconference SAN workshop on October 24th in New Orleans. This is a great opportunity to talk with state authorization folks from across the WICHE region (and sometimes beyond) as well as attend sessions on latest developments from Washington that will influence our work and best practices in state authorization and the delivery of education in alternative modalities.

Have a great week everyone ‐ I'll be sitting here reading the drafts of some self‐studies for an upcoming ABET visit and working on Boulder's HELC renewal for courses we offer in DC. As always, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
