OSTP Director Arati Prabhakar Visits CU Anschutz
On July 17, Arati Prabhakar, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), visited CU Anschutz and participated in a panel discussing the work of the University of Colorado Cancer Center and the Biden administration’s Cancer Moonshot program. Other members of the panel included Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera, Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), CU President Todd Saliman, CU Anschutz Chancellor Don Elliman, and researchers from CU Anschutz and CU Boulder. Rep. Caraveo Visits CU Boulder to Discuss Quantum
On July 3, Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-CO) made her first official visit to CU Boulder and JILA, CU ’s joint research institute with NIST, to discuss quantum research, translation, and workforce development. Rep. Yadira Caraveo is a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, which oversees national quantum policy. The Congresswoman was joined by Chancellor Justin Schwartz, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Massimo Ruzzene, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science Keith Molenaar, and other quantum researchers from CU Boulder and CU Anschutz. Colorado Delegation Members Call for Air Force ROTC at UCCS
Members of Colorado’s congressional delegation called for an Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTIC) detachment to be established at UCCS in a letter sent to the Department of Defense on June 20. The letter emphasized the potential popularity of a UCCS detachment and noted that it would lessen commute times for students in southern Colorado, who currently travel to CU Boulder weekly for required classes. Rep. Crow Joined CU Anschutz Leaders to Celebrate Rural Telehealth Program Expansion
On June 21, Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) visited program and campus leaders at CU Anschutz to announce new federal funding for expanded telehealth services for rural Coloradans through the CU School of Medicine Peer Mentored Care Collaborative (PMCC). The $403,000 Community Project Funding Request, championed by Rep. Jason Crow and also supported by Sens. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and John Hickenlooper (D-CO), will support the PMCC’s eConsult program in its work to support primary care doctors in underserved rural communities. Elevate Quantum receives $40 Million from U.S. Department of Commerce
On July 2, Elevate Quantum, a research consortium that includes CU Boulder and CU Denver, was awarded a Tech Hub Phase 2 implementation award from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) within the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Colorado consortium is one of 12 teams nationwide to receive this prestigious designation. The award will unlock $127 million in new federal and state funding and is expected to drive more than $2 billion in additional private capital for quantum innovation and lead to the creation of over 10,000 jobs. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell speaks at CU Boulder National Hazards Center’s Annual Workshop
On July 15, Deanne Criswell, Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), led a plenary discussion titled “Effective Communication in a Changing Climate” at the 49th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop. The workshop convenes diverse stakeholders from across the nation who are dedicated to alleviating the impacts of disasters and is led by CU Boulder’s Natural Hazards Center, the National Science Foundation’s information clearinghouse for the societal dimensions of hazards and disasters. Director Criswell previously visited the Natural Hazards Center in November 2023. A photo of the event was posted by the Natural Hazards Center.
CU Boulder Division of Student Affairs meets with HHS Leadership
On July 22, leadership from CU Boulder’s Division of Student Affairs met with Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 8 Director, Lily Griego, to discuss health equity, mental health, and other initiatives and policies being implemented by HHS of relevance to CU Boulder students.
