At the Anschutz Medical Campus, Anthony Pfaff and Jake Pratt are leveraging a new business intelligence team to create value and efficiency in the Department of Psychiatry.

One early example of the team’s positive work is demonstrated by the recent transformation in departmental health record reports. Previously a series of manually created spreadsheets, these are now automated thanks to the use of SQL and complex queries. Since the reports are run on a monthly basis, the ongoing time and effort savings is considerable.

The new, lean business intelligence team pulls information from System/campus databases, such as the CIW (Central Information Warehouse) and Clarity and Caboodle (in the Epic electronic health record system). Their work has been a game-changer in assuring rapid ability to query clinical and business data in bulk. The team notes that everyone needs data to do their jobs – and bringing in technical experts, like the business intelligence team, makes it faster and easier to get that data.
