Keeping your browser updated

Keeping your browser updated is essential for it to run smoothly and keep your computer safe and secure. Most browsers release updates to combat issues with phishing attacks, viruses and other malware. Often, the Service Desk will receive tickets about functionalities not working that simply require the user to update their browser.

The following browsers are the most compatible with CU System technology. They all automatically check for updates and apply them when you restart the web browser. However, many users rarely close all their browser windows. Here’s how to manually check for updates.

Edge

Microsoft’s browser works the seamlessly with OneDrive. It will automatically check for updates and applies them when you restart the web browser. However, many users rarely close all browser windows.

  1. In the browser, click the three horizontal dots in the top right corner.
  2. In the popup menu, click Settings.
  3. Under Settings, click About Microsoft Edge.
  4. The About page shows whether Edge is up to date. If it shows an update is available, select Download and proceed to install.

Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. If an update is available, the word Update will show next to the control settings menu, the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
  3. Click the three dots and select Relaunch to Update Chrome.
  4. If step 3 isn’t prompted, hover over “Help” and select “About Google Chrome”.
  5. Wait for the update to finish and click “Relaunch.” If there is an update available, it should be automatically downloaded but it will not relaunch your browser.
  6. Selecting About Google Chrome can also confirm that your browser is up to date.

Firefox

  1. In the browser, click the three vertical lines in the top right.
  2. In the dropdown menu, choose Help, then About Firefox.
  3. In the Firefox pop-up window, you should see an update status message. If the browser is running the latest version, it will say Firefox is up to date. Otherwise, it will say Restart to Update Firefox. Click Restart to install the updates and restart the browser.

NOTE:

For those still using Internet Explorer, you need to download a new browser. Internet Explorer’s desktop application is scheduled to be permanently disabled through a Microsoft Edge update in February 2023. We anticipate that Internet Explorer’s visual references in Windows will be removed with a later update this summer.
