The University of Colorado will relocate its enterprise servers to a new, modern facility on the Anschutz Medical Campus in October 2023. This critical data center relocation will be managed by University Information Services (UIS) in collaboration with campus partners.

The data center’s relocation was approved by CU’s IT Executive Governance committee ahead of receiving the final green light from President Todd Saliman and the four chancellors.

UIS will begin the move at noon Friday, Oct. 6, instead of the initially announced 8 a.m. start time. It will end by 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9.

All enterprise systems down

This critical project requires moving and setting up more than 11 tons of equipment. The task’s enormity requires a cold cutover, meaning all applications will be unavailable for the three-day implementation window. During the implementation window, UIS will focus solely on the data center with no upgrades or routine maintenance happening.

The UIS Customer Success Team and campus stakeholders are working to verify the move’s full impact and to mitigate the potential impact of system applications being unavailable.

“We are working closely with campus stakeholders to help them identify the impact on their businesses and encouraging them to communicate early and often with their customers,” said Jaya Vaidyanathan, UIS senior director of Research, Grants and Customer Success.

What systems are affected?

UIS has published a comprehensive list of enterprise system applications that will be unavailable during the move to facilitate sharing and communication across the university.

Each campus will compile and post its own list of campus-specific applications that may experience disruptions due to data or authentication dependencies on system applications. When complete, details will be shared by campuses and be accessible from the published list.

UIS is engaged with leaders from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Communications on each campus, with the goal that all students, faculty and staff are well-informed about the implementation window and any potential interruptions in services and begin to plan accordingly.

Collaborative testing will take place during the Oct. 6 weekend on every campus to ensure that all systems are live by 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9.
