Colorado allows paid time off to vote on Election Day

All Colorado employees are entitled to two hours of paid time off on Election Day to vote, if they are scheduled to work when polls are open, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 5.

How it works:

  • Colorado state law specifies that employees should apply for the absence with their employer prior to Election Day.
  • An employer can also indicate when an employee can take this absence, but it must be at the beginning or end of the employee’s shift.
  • One exception: If your shift starts or ends three or more hours between the time the polls open or close, this law does not apply, as there is adequate time to vote before or after your shift starts or ends. (In addition, Colorado sends mail ballots to all voters, which can be mailed or dropped off prior to election day.)

What if I live in another state?

For employees in a state other than Colorado, the law does not apply. However, your state may have separate paid time off policies for voting on Election Day. If this applies to you, reach out to your manager to review your state’s laws and policies prior to Election Day.
