International Tax Office debuts new online platform Sprintax Calculus

The International Tax Office has debuted a new online platform for exchanging information and documents with international employees and students.

The new platform, Sprintax Calculus, will be used to gather immigration, tax residency and tax treaty eligibility information from new international employees and students receiving taxable income. It will also be used to update current employees’ information on an annual basis.

Instead of meeting with International Tax Office staff, new employees will be required to complete a Sprintax profile to submit details and documents necessary to determine their U.S. tax residency status and ensure accurate taxation, including certain tax exemptions.

In addition, Sprintax Calculus will integrate with Sprintax Returns automatically to simplify the U.S. income tax filing process for nonresident aliens.

What to expect

For employees who have already met with the International Tax Office and students who are not employed, no action is needed. You will not receive any communications upon implementation of the new system but will receive emails from cuintltax-noreply@cu.edu when an annual review of records is requested near the end of the year.

Starting Aug. 1, all new employees who have not had an appointment with the International Tax office will receive an email from cuintltax-noreply@sprintax.com within approximately 14 days of their employment start date, asking them to complete their profile.

With the elimination of mandatory one-on-one appointments international employees can expect accurate tax calculations on their paychecks once they’ve completed their Sprintax profile without having to wait for an appointment.  This change will also reduce the need for retroactive payroll adjustments caused by appointment delays.

International students receiving non-qualified scholarships for the first time should also anticipate an invitation to complete a Sprintax profile during the semester that the scholarship is credited to their student account.

Additional information can be found on Sprintax’s Calculus FAQ. CU specific information and user guides can be found on the International Tax website.
