New portal tile gives instant view into weekly FAMLI benefits, supplemental leave

Employee Services has released a new tool to help faculty and staff better understand and use the University of Colorado’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) benefit.

FAMLI benefits offer partial wage replacement for employees who take leave for a variety of eligible reasons.

A new employee portal tile will display up-to-date information on an employee’s FAMLI benefit amount and supplemental leave time (sick or vacation) needed to make an employee’s wages whole.

Weekly FAMLI Benefit Overview

The Weekly FAMLI Benefit tile will only appear for employees approved for FAMLI leave in the employee portal’s CU Leave Benefits page (CU Resources > Benefits & Wellness > CU Leave Benefits).

The tile clarifies how much FAMLI will pay on a weekly basis and how much additional leave an employee may need to use to replace their salary on an hour-for-hour basis.

Tile information:

  • A summary an employee’s weekly FAMLI benefit.
  • Remaining percentage of their salary an employee can choose to supplement with other paid leave to fully replace their salary.

Calculating FAMLI benefits and supplemental leave can be complex: It can change based on the employee’s leave schedule, how much FAMLI benefit they still have available to use within the 12-month rotating limit, other available paid leave, base compensation and many other factors. If an employee is working a reduced schedule or taking intermittent leave, this only adds to the complexity.

Previously, employees received a leave plan letter at the beginning of their approved FAMLI absence period. If an employee’s planned leave or base salary rate changed, the letter was no longer accurate — creating challenges in calculating, communicating and using the benefit. The new tile will provide instant insights.

Questions?

Employee Services hopes this new tool will improve the ease and use of FAMLI benefits. If you have questions, email the Leave Team at leave@cu.edu.
